Redskins LB Brian Orakpo: My mom didn't think we'd make the playoffs
After Washington got off to a 3-6 start last season, Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo said not even his mom thought the team was going to make the playoffs.
Through the first nine games of the 2012 season, the Washington Redskins were sitting at 3-6 and looked like a long shot to make the playoffs. After the dismal start, a lot of people began to doubt the team, including linebacker Brian Orakpo's mom.
"We had doubters from all over the place," Orakpo said in an interview with 106.7 the Fan in Washington DC. "Even family was doubting us, everybody. My own mother said we weren't going to make the playoffs, like, she didn't believe it because it was such a hard feat to overcome."
Despite the doubt of Orakpo's mom and others, the Redskins did manage to overcome their horrible start. After a Week 10 bye, Washington ran off seven straight wins to finish 10-6 and win the NFC East for the first time since 1999. "It was playoff mode once we came out of that bye," Orakpo said via sportsradiointerviews.com. "We all believed that and we just kept rolling."
Orakpo missed the Redskins seven-game winning streak thanks to a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in Week 2 that caused him to miss the final 15 weeks of the regular season. The former first round pick said the injury's now behind him and he's ready to go, "I'm good. Ready to rock and roll," Orakpo said. "I've been working extremely hard, grinding extremely hard, ever since i went down in early September. I'm way ahead of where I needed to be and I'm ready to go."
A return by Orakpo should be a boon for the Redskins defense. Orakpo led the team in sacks in each of his first three seasons (2009-11) and has started in all 49 games he's ever played in for Washington.
