Report: 49ers not expected to pick up Aldon Smith's 5th-year option
According to a report the 49ers are 'not expected' to pick up Aldon Smith's fifth-year option.
May 3 is the deadline for picking up fifth-year options for players taken in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Aldon Smith is a curious case for the 49ers but they reportedly won't pick up his option.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the 49ers are "not expected" to pick up the option on Smith, their top pass rusher who has run afoul of the law recently.
Smith's most recent incident was an arrest at the Los Angeles Airport, where he was charged with a false report of a bomb threat.
Add in two previous DUI arrests and Smith's issues might outweigh talent, which is really saying something, because Smith is quite talented.
Smith has 42 sacks in three seasons where he has totaled just 43 games played. That's ... ridiculous.
But not so ridiculous that the Niners are definitely keeping him on the roster. Rumblings emerged Thursday that Smith might not even play for San Francisco in 2014, which would certainly make that fifth-year option a moot point.
Logic would dictate San Francisco should pick up the option. It's guaranteed for injury only and would be a steal relative to what Smith produces on the field.
If they ultimately decide not to keep Smith around it's clear his off-field issues have finally trumped his on-field talent.
