Report: Broncos offer Demaryius Thomas five-year contract
Let the negotiations start: The Broncos reportedly offered Demaryius Thomas a contract extension this week that would keep the wide receiver in Denver for at least five more years.
Demaryius Thomas has already been in Denver for four seasons and if the Broncos get their way, he'll be in town for at least five more. The team offered Thomas a five-year deal this week, according to CBS4's Vic Lombardi. Financial terms of the Broncos offer are unknown.
Back in March, the Broncos let Eric Decker walk during free agency and they clearly don't want the same thing to happen with Thomas. The former first-round pick is headed into the final year of a five-year rookie deal that he signed in 2010.
Broncos general manager John Elway has said that both Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas are priorities and that he'd like to try and get the deals done before training camp.
"We don't want to do anything once training camp starts," Elway said, via the Denver Post. "They're both in their last years, and we'd like for them to stay and be Broncos for a long time."
Demaryius Thomas has gone to the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons and is presumably in line for an extension that would make him a top-five receiver in terms of pay.
In two seasons with Peyton Manning, Demaryius Thomas has totaled 186 catches, 2,864 yards and 24 touchdown catches. The yardage total is third in the league over that span, the receptions total is sixth and the touchdown total is tied with Decker for third.
As for Julius Thomas, he wants to get something done, but he doesn't want to get involved, "I definitely would be open to working something out with the Denver Broncos," Thomas said. "I don't really understand how these things work. I'll let Frank (Bauer, his agent) and Mr. Elway take care of it."
