One of the top wideouts set to hit the market, Dwayne Bowe, looked like a lock to bolt the Chiefs this offseason, given the way things have gone while he's been in Kansas City.
Not so fast, my friends. According to a report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Chiefs are "actively pursuing a long-term deal" with Bowe.
Rapoport says the Chiefs have "met with [Bowe's] reps" and they "want to keep" the wideout in the fold. He also noted that new coach Andy Reid was very high on Bowe coming out of LSU.
This isn't an illogical decision by Kansas City. Bowe is far and away their best weapon in the passing game. After him, they've got wideouts Steve Breaston and Jonathan Baldwin, all-purpose weapon Dexter McCluster, tight end Tony Moeaki, running back Jamaal Charles and, well, that won't cut it regardless of who Reid brings in to play quarterback.
Bowe is one of the 10 best free agents on the market this offseason, and though he's had some inconsistencies during his career, he's also put up big numbers despite never having anything resembling a viable quarterback throwing him the ball.
During his time with KC, Bowe has caught passes from nine different quarterbacks and still managed to produce three 1,000-plus-yard seasons.
If the folks in KC think Bowe can get paid and become a consistent No. 1 wideout, and if the price is right, extending him is a pretty smart move. They're going to need weapons going forward, and Bowe is a very dangerous one when he's playing well.
