Report: Cliff Avril and Seahawks agree to terms

The defensive end market this offseason has been quiet to say the least. Until Wednesday afternoon, when the Seahawks stunned everyone by agreeing to terms with Cliff Avril.

Yes, wow. Word leaked out that Avril was on his way to visit Seattle and a few minutes later, Albert Breer of the NFL Network dropped a bombshell by reporting that Avril was actually signing.

It looked like the Seahawks made their big splash on Monday, when they traded for Percy Harvin (and eventually extended him), sparking the great NFC West Arms Race of 2013.

But then they decided to ramp things up, landing Avril, who's a perfect fit for what the Seahawks do on defense, especially with defensive end Chris Clemons suffering a torn ACL against the Redskins in the playoffs.

Avril, who is just 26, has 29 sacks over his last three seasons along with nine forced fumbles and a pick (for a touchdown!). He's a athletic young defensive end who should produce immediately for the Seahawks.

He also shores up their biggest weakness (and one no one was discussing, really): the defensive line. With the Clemons injury and Jason Jones departing for Detroit, Seattle was staring at a scenario where their defensive-line depth chart was severely weakened.

Oh, and this is what I imagine Pete Carroll saying to Jim Harbaugh the next time they meet:
