Report: Colts to bench Trent Richardson in favor of Donald Brown
The disappointments for Trent Richardson continues. One report states the Colts running back has been benched.
Donald Brown, who started the season behind Vick Ballard and Ahmad Bradshaw on the Indianapolis roster, has emerged as the team's most-productive running back, while Richardson has averaged just 2.8 yards per carry (well below his already mediocre career yards per carry average) and scored just twice in nine games.
“I don't know if he's snake bit, I don't know what the heck is going on,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said in mid-November. “We'll get it fixed."
Apparently, the team will have to get it fixed on the practice field, because NFL.com reports that Richardson will be benched this week in favor of Brown.
This move isn't at all surprising, but by making this news public, it shows the team is worried enough about making the postseason that it's willing to risk Richardson's confidence moving forward in order to make the short-term gain with Brown. Team sources told NFL.com that the Colts still are excited about Richardson and his potential moving into next season.
In Week 10 vs. the Titans, you'll recall, Brown rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, while Richardson only got the ball eight times for 22 yards. In that game, Richardson was used as more of a decoy than anything else, and though that's the only time this season Brown has gotten more work than Richardson, it sounds like that'll be the trend moving forward.
