One week after releasing Anthony Armstrong in a salary-cap related move, the Dallas Cowboys re-signed the veteran wide receiver on Wednesday according to multiple reports.
Armstrong, 30, appeared in one game for the Cowboys in 2012 after he was signed by Dallas in late-November. Armstrong was released in December to make room for guard Ronald Leary on the 53-man roster and re-signed in January. On March 27, Dallas waived Armstrong again to make room to sign safety Will Allen and linebacker Justin Durant.
Armstrong’s best season came in 2010 when he had career-highs of 44 catches and 871 receiving yards with the Redskins. Armstrong finished the year ranked third in yards per reception (19.8) among receivers that appeared in at least 60 percent of their team’s offensive snaps. Only DeSean Jackson and Mike Wallace had higher averages.
In the last two seasons, though, Armstrong’s play has waned. The former West Texas A&M receiver had seven catches for 103 yards in 2011, his final season with the Redskins. Last season, Armstrong had three catches in five games with the Dolphins before he was claimed off waivers by Jacksonville in late-October. The Jaguars released Armstrong less than two weeks later. The Cowboys are roughly $4.5 million under the $123 million salary cap.
Despite the move, Dallas could still target a wide receiver with an early-round pick. On Wednesday, the Cowboys met with former Baylor wide receiver Terrance Williams, NFL.com reported. In 2012, Williams led FBS in receiving yards (1,832) and yards per catch (18.89).
Armstrong reportedly met with the Giants earlier this week before he decided to return to Dallas.
