Report: Drew Brees, Saints 'not any closer,' 'have made little progress' on new contract

When Saints owner Tom Benson purchased the Hornets back in mid-April, he spent the afternoon answering questions with the media, which included inquiries about Drew Brees contract status. At the time, Benson said the two sides were "close" and "a deal would be done shortly."

However, a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN indicates the opposite: that Brees and the Saints are not close to a new deal. Specifically, Schefter writes that the two parties are "not any closer" to working out a new contract and that they "have made little progress" on the new deal.

This is much less surprising than Benson's comments were; when the Saints-turned-Hornets owner said that on April 13, it was borderline shocking, given the lack of rumblings about Brees being happy with his franchise tag.

Brees hasn't reported to the team's voluntary offseason workouts yet, and the lack of a deal for the most important player is becoming a perpetually swelling elephant in the corner of the room. At least general manager Mickey Loomis recognizes it.

"I recognize that the most important issue facing the New Orleans Saints is getting Drew Brees under contract," Loomis said before the NFL Draft began, per "I get that this is the most important contract I’ve negotiated."

It certainly is: if Loomis and the Saints can't figure out a way to lock something down before the season starts, it's possible that Brees will decide he doesn't want to play. He's already mentioned that he's not keen (and that's putting nicely) about playing on a franchise tag, since the last time he did that, it resulted in several screws being put in his shoulder.

In the end, for all the disastrous things that have happened to the Saints this offseason, not getting a new deal done for Brees would be the absolute worst when it comes to the product on the field.
