Report: Eagles tried to trade for C.J. Spiller
According to a report, the Eagles tried to trade for C.J. Spiller but the Bills weren't interested in their advances.
This offseason the Eagles raised eyebrows by landing Darren Sproles in a trade with the Saints, giving up just a fifth-round pick for the running back. They would've blown the roof off the sucker had they pulled off the deal they tried to land before that though.
The Bills, Mosher reports, never really showed any interest in making the deal and "talks never heightened to an offer."
A few things spring to mind off this report.
One, I'd love to see Spiller in Chip Kelly's offense. Like, really, really love it. He operates in space about as well as anyone not named LeSean McCoy and Chip gets guys in space. Oh well.
Two, you might say "everyone would like to trade for Spiller." Perhaps this is true. But Spiller is coming off an extremely disappointing season. After a 1,244-yard (and 6.0 yard per carry) season portended a massive breakout in 2013, Spiller only rushed for 933 yards on 4.6 yards per attempt. Love the attempt by Kelly and Howie Roseman to buy low on a player.
Three, good for the Bills for recognizing they don't want to give away talent. The Marshawn Lynch trade probably still stings.
Four, I can't see this really working if the Eagles were trying to lowball the Bills and the Bills were (I'd assume) thinking they could get a first-round pick (or something of that nature) for Spiller.
And finally, what does this say about McCoy? Maybe nothing but it's interesting the Eagles attempted twice -- and once managed to do so successfully -- to bring in another running back to beef up their depth chart. Perhaps it simply says they'd prefer McCoy not topple 300 carries every single season in order to keep him healthy.
Or maybe the attempt to land Spiller just says that Kelly and the Eagles are interested in acquiring as much talent as humanly possible. Outside of DeSean Jackson anyway.
