Report: Former NFL QB JaMarcus Russell down to 265 pounds
JaMarcus Russell, the former first-overall pick, has dropped 50 pounds in his latest NFL comeback attempt.
Bad news: Russell, the first-overall pick in the 2007 draft, last attempted an NFL pass in January 2010 before the Raiders finally decided to cut bait, and he may already be out of chances.
We first learned of Russell's latest efforts to return to the NFL in February. He admitted at the time that "I'm heavier than normal … This is just getting some perspective on where we're at. Once the pro day comes, I'll be in some great shape and my numbers will excel."
The plan was for Russell to get in shape and to have a pro day for interested NFL teams. It was something former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia, who worked with both Mark Sanchez and Russell this spring, alluded to in late March.
"The plan right now is to continue to prepare him for another month and put together a pro day where teams can come and see JaMarcus,'' Garcia said at the time. "Granted, his back is against the wall. This is a situation where if he doesn't do it now, it may never happen."
On April 8, it was announced that Russell's pro day wasn't happening due to lack of interest.
To Russell's credit, he's continued to train (he was at 288 in early April). What that means for his NFL future is another matter. As Garcia noted, "if he doesn't do it now, it may never happen."
Then again, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman wrote days before the cancelled pro-day workout that a "number of teams have been following Russell's comeback attempt closely. It's not the entire league, but it's more than a few teams."
It's pretty simple, really: "The reason that teams are interested," Freeman continued, "is because there just aren't enough good quarterbacks in the league."
For now, however, Russell remains unemployed.
