Report: Giants have interest in QBs Josh Freeman, Matt Flynn
Giants quarterback Eli Manning is out for the time being. Which means New York could use another quarterback.
With Giants quarterback Eli Manning out for the next six weeks or so after undergoing an arthroscopic ankle procedure on Thursday, the Giants reportedly are looking for a quarterback to add to the roster.
The Bears also have shown some interest in Freeman, but other than that, it's been a quiet offseason for the former Buccaneers first-round pick who was essentially fired by then-coach Greg Schiano last year and landed in Minnesota, where he played one game and then promptly disappeared.
Meanwhile, aside from backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay and having to make an occasional spot start, Flynn has flamed out in Seattle, Oakland and Buffalo. But Flynn's quarterbacks coach last season in Green Bay, Ben McAdoo, is now the Giants offensive coordinator, and since all of Flynn's success has come with the Packers, the Giants' apparent interest could make some sense.
But let's not get the wrong idea.
Writes the Daily News: "Both players have starting experience, but the Giants don't view them in that role. They seem convinced that the arthroscopic surgery Manning had on his left ankle on Thursday was a minor procedure, and that he’ll be able to resume running in late May and will be fully ready for the start of training camp in late July."
While the Giants will have to sign at least one more quarterback for OTAs and mini-camps -- especially if Manning really isn't ready to practice until late July -- remember that the Giants drafted Nassib in the fourth round of last year's draft. This offseason would be a good chance for him to show off whether he can be a legit NFL player. Otherwise, it could be up to Freeman or Flynn to prove they still have a viable place on somebody's an NFL roster.
