Report: Jets to meet with former Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson
More than almost any team in the league, the New York Jets enter this month's NFL Draft needing a major upgrade at wide receiver. A Jets receiver hasn't finished with 60 catches or more in a season since 2008. On Wednesday, the Jets are scheduled to meet with former University of Tennessee wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, according to reports.
It has been a dozen years since the New York Jets selected a wide receiver in the first round and more than 15 seasons since the franchise took Keyshawn Johnson with the first overall pick in the 1996 NFL Draft.
With a glaring need at receiver to ease the pressure on their 2013 starter at quarterback, the Jets could target a playmaker with the No. 9 overall selection. In each of the last four regular seasons, not a single Jets receiver has finished a year with at least 60 receptions. The Jets may address the need by selecting Cordarrelle Patterson on the opening night of the Draft at the end of this month. On Wednesday, the Jets will host a pre-draft visit with the former Tennessee Volunteers wideout, according to the New York Daily News.
Patterson (6-2, 216) combines a fluidity when running routes and a physicality in outmuscling defensive backs that might remind scouts of Dwayne Bowe. It might explain why Patterson is the top receiver in CBSSports.com’s latest Draft projections and the No. 12 prospect overall.
Patterson spent one season at Tennessee after setting more than a dozen records at Hutchinson Community College (Kan.). The physical receiver immediately endeared himself to the Volunteers’ fan base with a two-touchdown performance in a season-opening 35-21 win over N.C. State. Patterson notched the game’s opening score when he burned Wolfpack cornerback David Amerson for a 41-yard touchdown on a double-move down the left sideline. He followed it up with a 67-yard touchdown off an end around later in the first quarter. Amerson is a projected second-round selection.
In 2012, Patterson finished with 46 receptions for 778 yards and five touchdowns. He also ranked 14th in FBS in yards per kickoff return (27.96). While competing in track at Hutchinson Community College, Patterson ran the 100 meters in 10.33 seconds.
The Jets are not scheduled to meet with West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin, according to the Daily News. Austin (5-9, 174) is the second-ranked wide receiver and the No. 18 ranked prospect in CBSSports.com’s projections.
