Report: Joe Philbin, Jeff Ireland won't survive Incognito scandal
what did Dolphins coach Joe Philbin know and when did he know it, regarding the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin situation?
One of the biggest questions that has gone unanswered in the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin saga is what did Dolphins coach Joe Philbin know and when did he know it. He met with the media twice last week and both times said he wouldn't comment on the NFL's ongoing investigation into the bully allegations against Incognito.
Meanwhile, general manager Jeff Ireland, who reportedly suggested Martin "punch" Incognito, again faces scrutiny for how he goes about his job. (He once asked Dez Bryant whether Bryant's mother was a prostitute.)
Now, according to NFL.com's Mike Silver, neither Philbin nor Ireland "are expected to survive this."
Team owner Stephen Ross is reportedly "apoplectic" over the development.
CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports that "Some within the league office are interested as to whether Ross, whose tenure as owner has been pocked by unusual situations ... is in any way negligent as well. Ross is something of an absentee owner -- spending quite a bit of time in New York where his business interests remain -- and numerous league sources have pointed to a leadership chasm in the organization, with some unsure of the chain of command on given matters, and swaying factions."
Scandals always have scapegoats and the coach and GM could be just that in Miami. But it's also fair to ask why Philbin didn't have a better handle on the day-to-day goings-on of his team. Even if Philbin didn't know the particulars of Incognito's relationship with Martin, the assistant coaches almost certainly did.
For now, the Dolphins are remaining tight-lipped while the NFL conducts its investigation. But few would be surprised if Philbin and Ireland find themselves out of work in the near future.
