Report: Josh Freeman misses team photo, not named team captain
Even before the loss to the Jets, the Bucs were in the middle of a slow-motion train wreck.
Leading up to the Week 1 Buccaneers-Jets game, New York and Rex Ryan were considered the dysfunctional bunch. Now, the Jets are 1-0 with their rookie quarterback and the Bucs are in the middle of a slow-motion train wreck.
Before the opener, Josh Freeman wasn't named a team captain after serving in that capacity for three seasons. (According to a PFT report, a players-only meeting followed because there were concerns about the legitimacy of the vote that resulted in Freeman losing his captaincy. Coach Greg Schiano called the story "100 percent inaccurate.")
And last week, prior to that vote for captains, Freeman was a no-show for a team photo, according to the Tampa Tribune's Ira Kaufman. When asked about it, Freeman texted this to the Tribune: “You know I can’t do Buc non-sanctioned interviews.’’
Kaufman then tweeted this:
Josh Freeman's tenure with the Bucs appears to be reaching critical mass. He needs a big game Sunday against the Saints to stop the bleeding— Ira Kaufman (@IKaufmanTBO) September 12, 2013
“My information is that it’s not the first time Freeman has been late for or completely missed a team function,” Kaufman explained during an appearance Thursday on SiriusXM (via PFT). ...“If the Bucs had a viable option, Freeman might already be replaced.”
Speaking with the media on Thursday, Schiano said that Freeman overslept for a team meeting last Monday and has been late for things before, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud. The coach then added that "I do trust Josh."
Good news: The Saints struggle away from domes. Bad news: The Bucs' offense doesn't discriminate; they can struggle anywhere.
