Heading into free agency, the Lions had a plan. And some 23 hours later, everything appears to be falling in place. Earlier Wednesday, Detroit signed running back Reggie Bush to a four-year deal, instantly upgrading their backfield. A short time later, the team bolstered the secondary with the addition of safety Glover Quin, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Quin, a 2009 fourth-round pick out of New Mexico, played four years for the Texans where he became one of the team's most underrated players. His versatility made him an asset in defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' scheme (Quin played cornerback before moving to safety), and Houston expressed interest in re-signing him but a tight salary-cap situation prevented it.

The Lions, meanwhile, were in desperate need of playmakers. The defense ranked 24th last season, according to Football Outsiders, and 21st against the pass.

ProFootballFocus.com notes Quin is adept at lining up in the slot at free safety or in the box as a run-stuffing strong safety, "earning positive grades for run defense and coverage in the last three seasons." It gets better: "[Quin's] marquee performance of 2012 came against division rival Minnesota, a game in which he recorded 5 stops in run defense against Adrian Peterson and the Vikings."
