Report: Matt Cassel will be Vikings starting QB vs. Ravens
With Christian Ponder still recovering from a concussion he received in Week 13, Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel is expected to get the start on Sunday in Baltimore.
Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel will make his third start of the season when Minnesota plays in Baltimore on Sunday, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Officially, coach Leslie Frazier said it's 'likely' that Cassel will start against the Ravens.
"There are some things that, at this stage, [Ponder] has to get done that he wasn't able to get done today," Frazier said, via the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Ponder was injured in the second quarter of Minnesota's win over Chicago. After Ponder's injury, Cassel entered the game and threw for 243 yards and a touchdown as the Vikings came back from a 20-10 second half deficit to win in overtime.
Cassel's performance against the Bears is a big reason why he's starting over Josh Freeman.
"What he did in the second half of that ballgame on Sunday, and also, seeing his comfort level with where we are, and having a comfort level with him, as well," Frazier said of starting Cassel over Freeman. "But his work on Sunday has a lot to do with it. He did an outstanding job in the second half of that ballgame against Chicago."
Cassel is 1-1 in two starts this season. In Week 4, Cassel threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns as the 0-3 Vikings topped the Steelers for their first win of the season. In Week 6, Cassel threw two interceptions in a 35-10 loss to Carolina.
