Report: Michael Sam doesn't want cameras on him during NFL Draft
So much for watching former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam as he watches the NFL draft.
When the NFL draft begins later this week at Radio City Music Hall, there's a real chance former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam won't hear his name called at all. Reportedly, some scouts even believe that Sam won't make it as an undrafted free agent.
That, then, could explain why, as Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch reports, Sam won't allow anybody to watch him watching (or not watching) the draft.
Wrote Deitsch: "Both ESPN and NFL Network have made repeated efforts to get a camera with Sam upon his being drafted. His camp has declined those entries so far. Look for Sam to be covered more than your usual late-round pick, but the discussion will center more around his football abilities than the societal impact of his selection."
The decision, of course, makes sense for Sam. Can you imagine as the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds drag by and Sam still hasn't been drafted? And that camera stays on Sam the entire time as his potential pro career explodes before it even begins? That could get, well, pretty awkward, though awkward TV probably would make for excellent viewing.
Since his impressive news conference at the NFL combine in February, we haven't heard much about Sam.
But that could be because now's the time when people mostly talk about the top prospects and the potential first-round picks. Since he's neither of those the Sam talk has slowed to a crawl.
But by the third day of the draft, it seems likely that our attention will turn back to Sam. Unfortunately for us (and for the two networks who want him), it sounds like he doesn't want to make himself available for public consumption.
