Report: Odell Beckham out another week with hamstring injury
Giants rookie Odell Beckham originally injured his hamstring during OTAs and aggravated it last Tuesday during the team's first training camp workout.
Sammy Watkins was the best wide receiver in the 2014 NFL Draft. It explains why the Bills traded up to No. 4 to grab him. But Odell Beckham Jr., taken 12th overall by the Giants, was considered a close second by many, and unlike Waktins, is also a dangerous return man.
Of course, all of that is moot when Beckham can't get on the field. He originally injured his hamstring during OTAs and aggravated it last Tuesday during the team's first training camp workout. And now, according to the Newark Star-Ledger, he'll be sidelined another week while he recovers.
Not surprisingly, coach Tom Coughlin is frustrated by this development.
"Sure it is (disappointing)," he said Sunday. "You're trying to put a team together. We saw too much of [Beckham on the sidelines] in the spring."
No matter how badly Coughlin wants Beckham on the field, he knows that, ultimately, it's not up to him.
"They're (the trainers) not going to let him go if he's in danger of hurting himself. That's all there is to it," Coughlin said. "I can stand there all I want, but it's not going to happen. When they think he can go and not risk recurring injury, they'll let him go."
As it stands, Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle are the Giants' starting wideouts with Mario Manningham and Beckham behind them on the depth chart. Whomever ends up on the receiving end of Eli Manning's throws, the expectation is that the veteran quarterback will complete 70 percent of his passes in 2014.
For some perspective:
Last season, Eli Manning completed 57.5% of his passes (317 for 551). ... He was 69 completions short of 70%.— Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoNYDN) July 28, 2014
Which brings us back to Beckham, who once did this in college (and will need to do it a lot more to get Manning anywhere close to 70 percent):
