Report: Packers agree to one-year, $4 million deal for DT B.J. Raji
B.J. Raji reportedly will return to the Packers, the only team he's ever known.
As Packers defensive tackle B.J. Raji continues to lose snaps each season and make less of an impact every year, it was thought there was a decent chance Green Bay could let the five-year veteran walk into free agency.
But in the past week, the two sides reportedly were close to a deal, and on Friday, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora confirmed the Packers and Raji have agreed to a one-year contract. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was the first to report the news, and the paper also writes that the deal is expected to be for $4 million.
"Limited options for him out there," La Canfora tweeted. "This is the best fit."
The 27-year-old had the best season of his career in 2010 when he recorded 6.5 sacks and 39 tackles (he didn't make his only Pro Bowl appearance until the next year, though, when he tallied 3.5 sacks). But he also hasn't recorded a sack since 2011, and he played only 666 snaps last season. Raji, though, is on record as being OK with a reduced role.
"It's funny, man. The older I get, I understand," Raji said last season. "I'm obviously trying to be the best at my position within the scheme, but I'm trying to grow more to be a better teammate, be a better leader, because I understand the bigger goal. ... My snaps are cut down. But I can still grow in other areas and do more than just plays on the field."
Now, though, he gets another chance to prove that he can be worth a long-term deal after next season. Grabbing a sack or two probably wouldn't hurt.
