Report: Packers to retire Brett Favre's jersey, induct him into team HOF
Less than a month ago, Packers president Mark Murphy said that the team would not retire Brett Favre's jersey in 2014. Apparently, minds have changed.
The Packers will make official amends with quarterback Brett Favre this season, after all.
That's because the team will retire his No. 4 jersey and induct him into the Packers Hall of Fame, according to ESPN.com. The Packers already had announced Sunday night that the team and Favre would make a joint announcement Monday at 1:30 p.m.
Favre won't be in attendance at the news conference, but he's expected to speak on the phone.
Less than a month ago, Packers president Mark Murphy said that the team would retire Favre's jersey but that it would not occur during the 2014 season, and he pointed to the idea that Favre was worried about getting booed by Packers fans.
Soon after that, Favre said that theory wasn't true.
"I've heard that was a concern of mine, and I'm here to tell you I'm not," Favre said. "I'm not worried about that. I'm well aware that you can't please everyone. Not everyone's going to like you regardless, and you know what, so be it. But I think the 16 years that I had in Green Bay speaks for itself.
"Yeah, you're right, I have played with other teams, but I will be remembered as a Packer. I feel that. I think the true Packer backers, which there are tons out there, feel the same way. I'm not the first player to play for other teams or rivals."
So, it's a good thing the Packers are making this announcement in August. Because as we learned Sunday, Packers fans like to plan far, far in advance.
