Report: Patriots, Eagles could be interested in Darrelle Revis
The Eagles and Patriots could be interested in chasing Darrelle Revis if he's released by the Buccaneers before Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.
For weeks, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora's been reporting that Darrelle Revis could get run out of Tampa Bay. It appears that's happening, whether he's traded or released. And if he's dumped by the Buccaneers, the Eagles and Patriots could be interested.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Philly and New England are "two teams to watch" if/when Revis is released.
It's believed the Bucs will release Revis before 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday in order to avoid giving the Jets a third-round pick in 2014.
New York received a first-round pick, which they used to draft Sheldon Richardson, and a conditional fourth-round pick, which can become a third-round pick, in exchange for Revis last offseason. If Revis is on the roster by 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, that fourth-round pick becomes a third-rounder.
About those teams, though.
Part of the reason the Jets wanted to trade Revis in the first place was to dictate where he would play. Read: not New England. If Revis landed with the Patriots -- and it's a very logical fit -- that's a nightmare for Jets fans and ownership. He fits with New England given that they could be losing Aqib Talib, who wants a big contract. The way Bill Belichick turned Talib loose covering opposing team's best receiving weapon? It would work even better with Revis.
The Eagles are coming off a surprisingly impressive season, need help in the secondary and could pull away in the NFC East if they landed someone of Revis caliber. Of course, a lot of people thought the same thing when they signed Nnamdi Asomugha a few years back.
Still, adding Revis would be a good thing.
And that goes for lots of teams out there. If Revis hits the market, expect aggressive pursuit from multiple teams and at least one "mystery suitor." You can't have a good free-agent chase without that.
