Report: Patriots worked out QB Brady Quinn Monday
QB Brady Quinn told The Dan Patrick Show that he tried out for an NFL team Monday, but refused to say which one. Reports suggest it was the Patriots.
On Thursday, Fox Sports announced that they had hired former Notre Dame and NFL quarterback Brady Quinn to cover the college and professional game this fall. A day later, Quinn told The Dan Patrick Show that he tried out for an NFL team Monday, but refused to say which one.
Quinn, the Browns' 2007 first-round pick, told ProFootballTalk that the tryout "went well," adding: "In this particular situation, though, they need something to happen in order for me to possibly be there."
Meanwhile, The Dan Patrick Show's Andrew Perloff, and later ESPN.com's Field Yates, said the mystery team was the New England Patriots.
On the surface, it's a curious development because the Patriots have Tom Brady, obviously, and behind him Ryan Mallet and rookie second-rounder Jimmy Garappolo.
But ESPN.com's Mike Reiss offers a good explanation of what's likely happening: "In most cases, but not all, the answer is usually that it's solely for emergency purposes. If the team has an injury or an unexpected trade interest in top backup Ryan Mallett, who enters the final year of his contract, it needs to be ready with a replacement and part of that is having as up-to-date information on the health and skills of available players as possible.
"That likely best explains why the Patriots had Quinn in for a workout, as he was previously on the radar as a possible 'free-agent fit' based on his experience in the team's system."
Put another way: Quinn probably shouldn't quit his new day job just yet.
In six NFL seasons, Quinn had a 4-16 career mark and in addition to the Browns, he made (sometimes brief) stops in Denver, Kansas City, Seattle, New York (Jets) and St. Louis.
