Report: Raiders plan to target QB Matt Schaub in free agency
Oakland will target Matt Schaub, Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman and Michael Vick -- in that order -- in the coming weeks, according to a report.
It's been a busy first few days of free agency for the Raiders, a team that managed just four wins in 2013 and have needs up and down the roster as they look ahead to 2014. Their biggest need -- a franchise quarterback -- could be addressed through the draft, where Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel could be available when Oakland goes on the clock with the fifth-overall pick.
Except this is the Raiders, where common sense and level heads don't always prevail. According to ESPN, Oakland will target Matt Schaub, Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman and Michael Vick -- in that order -- in the coming weeks.
Of course, neither Schaub nor Sanchez have been released by their respective teams, and more than that, neither should be considered a solution the Raiders' current quarterback situation. Schaub went on a pick-six bender last season before mercifully landing on the bench. And Sanchez was a turnover machine in 2011 and 2012 until a shoulder injury last preseason landed him on injured reserve.
Freeman, meanwhile, was run out of Tampa Bay last fall before signing with the Vikings where he couldn't beat out Christian Ponder or Matt Cassel. Vick makes the most sense for the Raiders, but he'll be 34 in June and can't stay healthy.
Still, none of these names preclude the Raiders from drafting a franchise quarterback in May. But if the front office feels like Schaub/Sanchez/Freeman/Vick can serve as a bridge to whomever is the next franchie QB (in much the same way Alex Smith has in Kansas City), then the team could focus on finding a left tackle at the top of the draft (Greg Robinson and Jake Matthews are possibilities).
As it stands, the Raiders have quarterbacks Terrelle Pryor, Matt McGloin and Trent Edwards on the roster. But both general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen have said previously that the position remains unsettled. We'll have to wait and see if that means the team will address those concerns through free agency, the draft, or both.
