Report: Shane Vereen to miss a few weeks with broken wrist
Though he rushed for 101 yards, Shane Vereen played most of Sunday with a small broken bone in his wrist.
New England’s Shane Vereen rushed 14 times for 101 yards in his team’s 23-21 escape vs. the Bills on Sunday, and he was the only NFL running back in Week 1 to rush for triple-digits. And he did so with an injury that reportedly will keep him out for the next few weeks.
Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reports that Vereen broke a small bone in his wrist Sunday and that he was to undergo surgery Monday. Not only that, but he broke it on the first play of the game.
Vereen played entire game with injury but experienced numbness afterwards as bone sits on nerve— Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) September 9, 2013
The loss of Vereen won’t be easy to overcome. He averaged 7.1 yards per rush on Sunday, and he was targeted for passes 10 times by Tom Brady (Vereen recorded seven receptions for 58 yards). He was also in on 60 percent of the Patriots offensive snaps (the fifth-most of any New England skills player) and 33 percent of their special teams plays.
Now, it appears the team could go with Stevan Ridley, though he was benched after fumbling Sunday and played on just 15 percent of the team’s offensive snaps after carrying the ball nine times for 46 yards.
