Report: 'Signs point' to Rex Ryan returning as Jets coach
According to a report, 'signs point' towards Rex Ryan coaching the Jets in 2014.
Ever since the beginning of 2013, I've maintained that Rex Ryan getting the Jets to 8-8 would be a miracle and make him worthy of Coach of the Year consideration. He's got the team on the cusp of .500 heading into Week 17, and it might end up saving his job.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that "signs point" to Ryan coming back in 2014 as the Jets head coach, although "some hurdles remain" to make it happen.
A source tells him the attitude surrounding Ryan's return has "turned from negative to positive."
This isn't something he wants, of course. But Ryan apparently believed that he wouldn't have a say so in general manager John Idzik's decision after the season.
One of the hurdles Schefter mentions is the Idzik/Ryan relationship, which has by many accounts been better than expected. There's also Ryan's contract status (he has one year remaining on his deal but would obviously prefer to receive an extension) and the fact that "a half dozen coaches" are working on one-year contracts.
So all of that's got to be worked through. And the Jets could still get blown out by the Dolphins in Miami on Sunday and make all this null and void. But if they can play spoiler to the Fins playoff hopes and get themselves to 8-8, it's entirely possible that Ryan could keep his job.
