Report: Texans may land Ryan Mallett if they draft Clowney No. 1
Ryan Mallett is reportedly being traded to the Texans.
Tom Curran of CSN New England reports the two sides are working on a deal and that it "may be done soon."
Curran adds, however, that it's "not a done deal but the machinations have begun." He later added that, well, let's all pump the brakes a bit.
Second source says nothing doing at the moment on Mallett to Houston. We'll watch how it plays out. Makes sense if Clowney is No. 1.— Tom E. Curran (@tomecurran) May 8, 2014
CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora also reports that it may be premature to consider Mallett a Texans QB at this point.
From what I am gathering, Pats don't have anything going with the Texans on Mallett right now. We shall see— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) May 8, 2014
Mallett was a third-round pick for the Patriots in the 2011 NFL Draft; New England taking him was a pretty huge surprise.
The Pats have groomed him as Tom Brady's theoretical successor, but Mallett's contract is up following the 2014 season and his status with New England is somewhat in limbo.
One of the guys that groomed Mallett is current Texans coach Bill O'Brien, who coached Mallett for a year before he left to take the Penn State head coaching position.
O'Brien is headed into his first season as Texans coach and everyone knows he wants (read: needs) a quarterback. The only problem is there's no sure-fire franchise quarterback in this draft and Jadeveon Clowney's too promising to pass up.
The Texans could take a quarterback with their first pick in the second round (No. 33 overall) but there's no telling who's there.
History tells us that trading for quarterbacks once drafted by Bill Belichick isn't a smart move (see: the Chiefs and Matt Cassel) but O'Brien certainly knows Mallett.
As long as Houston isn't giving up anything more than a third-round pick and isn't signing Mallett to a new deal or anything, one could make the case this is a smart move.
