Busy day for backup quarterbacks. Matt Hasselbeck woke up Monday morning on the Titans' roster, and he'll go to bed reportedly a member of the Colts. Replacing him in Tennessee? Former Bills starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Fitzpatrick was a 2005 seventh-round pick out of Harvard who served as a No. 2 quarterback in St. Louis and Cincinnati before assuming the starting gig in Buffalo. He met with the Titans over the weekend in Arizona ahead of the NFL owners meetings, according to The Tennessean's Jim Wyatt.
Fitzpatrick started 53 games with the Bills over four seasons, although his on-field fortunes seemed to take a turn for the worse after he signed a six-year, $59 million contract in October 2011. Buffalo released him last week. For now, he sounds resigned to his role as something other than the starter.
“I see myself being a very valuable guy in that regard,” Fitzpatrick told the Buffalo News after he was released last week. “For me, pride is never going to get in the way. But respect and pride can maybe go hand-in-hand. It's probably more respect than pride.”
Like Hasselbeck before him, Fitzpatrick will be the backup and mentor to Jake Locker, the Titans' 2011 first-round pick.
