Rex Ryan: 'I know I have a contract for next year'

After beating Cleveland on Sunday, the Jets are 7-8, and to celebrate what really has been a surprisingly good season for the team, coach Rex Ryan and his players took a victory lap around MetLife Stadium in its last home appearance of 2013.

On Saturday, Ryan reportedly gave a speech to his team in which he said he believed he would be fired and asked his players to come along for the final two games of the season. Now that the Jets have climbed to within one game of .500, Ryan said that he hasn't heard from management about his future.

"I know I have a contract for next year," he said, via ESPN New York. "What I do know, guys, is that I'm coaching this team. I've said this all season long: My job is to focus on the present and what's right now."

General manager John Idzik, of course, must worry about the future, and even if you believe Ryan has earned at least another season at the helm of the Jets, Idzik probably will want to enter 2014 with his own coaching hire.

Although Ryan perhaps has done the best coaching job of his career that season, it might not be enough to save his job.

As for the Fox Sports report regarding his motivational team meeting Saturday, he said, "Whether the report is accurate or not, I'm going to tell you this: Those things will stay in-house."

Unfortunately for Ryan and the sizable group of Jets players who like playing for him, Idzik might soon be changing the locks.
