Rex Ryan on Geno Smith: 'Excited to see him play' Saturday
Jets coach Rex Ryan confirmed Geno Smith would start at quarterback vs. the Giants in the team's preseason game Saturday.
Jets coach Rex Ryan has made it official: there’s still a legitimate quarterback competition on his team.
Ryan confirmed that to reporters Thursday, saying, “I think he’s looked good. I’m excited to see him play.”
As for how long Smith will play, Ryan said, "I can't give you a definitive answer on that." Ryan also said Sanchez -- who has performed decently well in the preseason -- will participate.
And last week, Ryan said this after practice:
"It was brutal. It was Geno's worst day. I think, and obviously, the ankle's part of it, but ... way too many picks and things. Did not look comfortable today. Obviously he has to come back from it, he will come back from it. It was a bad day. Everybody, we've seen it, guys have bad days. But this was a really bad day for Geno.”
But reportedly, Smith has improved in the past week or so.
“I just have to go out there and execute,” Smith said earlier this week. “Do what I'm told, do what I'm coached to do, go out there [and] run the plays to the best of my ability, make sound reads, be good with my footwork [and] just prove to the coaches and teammates that, hey, I belong here.”
For now, it appears that Sanchez is still the favorite to win the starting job. But Smith probably could change that with a strong performance against the Giants
