Roddy White playing for Falcons, Asante Samuel out
Despite reports that it would be 'challenging' for Roddy White to play in Week 1, the Falcons' star receiver will be active against the Saints in New Orleans.
The Saints and Falcons are scheduled for a shootout on Sunday -- the 1 p.m. ET affair should feature a pile of points. And even though he might be limited, Roddy White's presence should equate to more points for Atlanta. Additionally, the Falcons might not be up to the task of keeping Drew Brees and the Saints offense at bay as No. 1 cornerback Asante Samuel is inactive.
It might also be a little harder for the Falcons to score as it will reportedly be "challenging" for White to play in New Orleans.
This report rings true with what CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported earlier in the week -- White's "fully determined" to play Sunday against the Saints but could struggle.
Roddy White fully determined to play Sunday for ATL. He could be limited however.— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) September 7, 2013
White's nursing a high ankle sprain and Adam Schefter of ESPN notes that he could find it difficult to even get on the field at all.
White has been listed as questionable all week long on the Falcons injury report but it wasn't believed that would actually stop him. The former first-round pick has never missed a game since being drafted by Atlanta in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Regardless of whether White is actually on the field, it stands to reason that Julio Jones should receive extra attention from Matt Ryan. During the preseason when White was injured, Jones gobbled up targets at a high rate.
Tony Gonzalez is out on the field as well and Steven Jackson is a very capable receiver at running back. If White's forced to miss any actual snaps, though, Harry Douglas isn't exactly an equivalent in terms of his replacement.
Atlanta will be fine without White at 100 percent but he's a critical cog to their offense. Without him completely healthy, a shootout with the Saints is a much more dangerous proposition.
