Saints bring back wide receiver Robert Meachem
Though he was described as 'broken down' recently, receiver Robert Meachem has a new job in New Orleans
With the news that linebacker Jonathan Vilma has been placed on the short-term IR list, the Saints have made their corresponding move. New Orleans is bringing back an old receiver who might, in the opinions of some, be too busted up to make a difference.
That would be Robert Meachem, who was released a few days ago by the Chargers and was signed Tuesday to a one-year deal by the Saints.
Meachen had some solid seasons in New Orleans -- from 2009-11, he averaged 43 catches and 6.7 touchdowns per season for the Saints -- but he was awfully unimpressive last season in San Diego when he tallied just 14 receptions for 207 yards.
Considering the Chargers' receiving corps is extremely thin at the moment, that should be a clue as to how effective Meachem might be as he enters the seventh year in his league.
In a word, he was subpar this preseason.
"You take a negative and you turn it into a positive," Meachem told the New Orleans Times Picayune. "That's my mission now. To go out there and show the gifts that I was blessed with. Put my head down and just relax and go play football."
One problem for Meachem. The San Diego Union Tribune’s Kevin Acee recently penned a piece in which he wrote, “one person familiar with the situation said emphatically that Meachem is 'broken down,' that his body simply isn’t what it was. Meachem was a receiver who did one thing well. He ran fast. That was enough -- for a time and as a part of a certain offense in which he could just be another guy. Now, he’s a receiver who can’t separate, runs poor routes and has undependable hands, and he has no business being on the field.”
Maybe, it’ll be a different story in New Orleans (but don’t be surprised if it’s not).
Robert Meachem may sign with #Saints? That's the one (and maybe only) offensive system where he can still thrive.— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) September 3, 2013
