Sheldon Richardson wins 2013 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year
Sheldon Richardson was handed the 2013 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Saturday night.
Richardson, one of the Jets two first-round picks, helped the Jets dominate up front on defense and paired extremely well with Muhammad Wilkerson.
The Jets rookie (who also won the CBSSports.com Defensive Rookie of the Year) ended up compiling 3.5 sacks and 77 total tackles.
"I was surprised," Richardson said. "It was a toss-up to me. It was a tight race."
Richardson was also featured as a goal line back in the Jets offense at times, rushing four different times and scoring a pair of touchdowns in 2013. But he didn't expect to win Offensive Player of the Year.
"Nah," Richardson said when asked if he expected offensive votes. "Eddie Lacy had more touchdowns than me."
