Stanford's David Shaw 'proud' of Jonathan Martin for taking stand
Stanford coach David Shaw says he's 'proud' of his former player Jonathan Martin for taking a stand against bullying from Richie Incognito.
Despite the outrage against Richie Incognito, there's not a particularly vocal subset of people supporting Jonathan Martin, especially down in Miami. Out in California, though, he's getting plenty of support.
Martin's old coach and current Stanford head coach David Shaw said on Monday that he's "proud" of Martin for standing up against Richie Incognito but hasn't been heard from since he departed the Dolphins for California.
"We're proud of Jonathan," Shaw said. "Like I said, the biggest thing for Jonathan, in my mind, is getting him back to a position where he's ready to play the game that he loves."
Shaw was also asked if it's a problem for Stanford guys making a transition to the NFL (because they're not "typical NFL-types") and said "not at all" while citing Andrew Luck and David DeCastro as guys who are doing just fine. (Richard Sherman also played at Stanford. Don't bank on him getting bullied.)
He was also asked if thought Martin was "oversensitive" and pointed out that it's not as if the incident with Martin and Richie Incognito is the first time we've heard about issues with the aggressive offensive lineman.
"I think what we're talking about is something that's out of the ordinary," Shaw said. "We're talking about something that, as more comes out, we're finding out this is not just Jon being oversensitive, this is Jonathan being the first person to speak out about what's been going on.
"And now it's like almost everyone's taking that opportunity to speak out. Which once again points back to the fact that this isn't an isolated incident about Jonathan. This is apparently a difficult situation."
It certainly is. Whether or not the team is behind Martin -- and there's some question as to whether they are -- is irrelevant. There were clearly some boundaries crossed here. Martin took a stand. And his former coach is getting his back.
