Steve Smith not talking about meeting with Dave Gettleman
Steve Smith has no interest in talking about his meeting with Panthers GM Dave Gettleman and what they decided on his future.
Panthers GM Dave Gettleman caused one of the bigger stirs at the combine when he said that wide receiver Steve Smith, an all-time fan-favorite in Carolina, was part of the evaluation process for Carolina in 2014.
It's a standard answer but for some reason Gettleman got the heat turned up because Smith didn't know he was part of the evaluation process? Even though Smith does know that ... maybe it's because he didn't feel like the two sides were on the same page.
Whatever. They had a meeting to clear the air and Smith was asked about that meeting while serving as an ESPN analyst for Clemson's Pro Day and the Sammy Watkins show. He had little to say.
“Here’s all I have to say about it,” Smith said. “I am working out and doing all the things as I am a Carolina Panther. That’s where I am. And I’ll continue to move forward until I am told otherwise."
Smith may be told "otherwise" soon. His cap number is $7 million and it only grows in the next two years. Smith is 35 years old and he's showing signs of slowing down, even though he remains a productive receiver for his age.
Plus, the Panthers need salary cap room. Badly.
"It’s a business and I understand that, and ultimately decisions aren’t up to me," Smith said. "I’m a player. At the end of the day, if a team decides to move on, I have to either accept that or I go sit at home and cry about it. So we’ll see."
So but seriously, Steve, what did you and Gettlemen talk about?
"Like every offseason they are making moves and making decisions that are going to be, moving forward, for the betterment of the team," Smith said "Those decisions and those conversations, I don’t know all of them. I’m not in the meeting rooms. But we talked about some things. And what we talked about it is what we talked about."
