The past two seasons have been the best of 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown’s six-year career. And in the final year of his contract with San Francisco, he was scheduled to earn $2.925 million in 2013 before possibly heading onto the free agent market.
Which would have been a fine deal if Brown knew he was supposed to work out in Santa Clara in the offseason in order to claim $2 million of that salary. But he didn’t know about it, and on Thursday, he fired his agent, Brian Overstreet.
Now, Brown is out $2 million that he could have easily earned -- he was working out in Texas rather than in California -- and he doesn’t have representation. Not a great day for him.
"I no longer have an agent as of now," Brown said after practice, via the Sacramento Bee. "... No one wants to leave money on the table. If I would have known the clauses in my contract and that's what agents get paid to do -- to orchestrate the contract and let you know what you can and can't do as far as workouts and OTAs and things of that sort. That's what he got paid to do, he didn't do that, so in my opinion he had to be let go."
Ugh, that must have been a brutal call from the agent to his client to let him know of the snafu. I mean, that must have been how Brown heard about the mistake. Right?
Um, nope. In fact, Brown said, this was the tweet from Yahoo Sports’ Brian McIntyre where he learned about his loss of so much money.

So, what next? Well, Brown said he’s going to sit down with 49ers management and see if he can recoup some of that lost money. And a word to the wise: any agents who seek to represent Brown in the future, it’s best to know that he’s not going to be so lax about the wording in his contract from now on.
