Texans owner Bob McNair announces he's cancer-free
Great news out of Houston. Texans owner Bob McNair has beaten two forms of cancer.
Texans owner Bob McNair never announced he was fighting cancer. He gave an assumed name at his treatment center, and he was given a key to the back door so he could slip in unsuspectingly. He didn't want anyone to know.
But this week, he made his first public announcement about it, and it was a good one. McNair told reporters that he is, in fact, cancer free after battling two different forms of the disease for the past 10 months.
As the Houston Chronicle writes, "McNair's remarkable recovery has included ground-breaking experimental treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), painful surgery on the left side of his head and neck and 30 sessions of radiation, causing second-degree burns that required a plastic surgeon to perform skin grafts."
The 77-year-old McNair told reporters he's never been through anything like that before. But now he's been given a clean bill of health.
"It was worth the pain and suffering," McNair said. "I didn't think I was going to die. I knew some did. I knew there were some rumors. That's one of the reasons I'm talking about it.
"I don't want people to think it's something it's not. I'm not ill. I'm healthy. I'm not going anywhere. We've got Super Bowls to win."
For McNair, who's also battled skin cancer for the past two decades, the radiation was the worst part of the ordeal. Each session, he said, lasted between 30-40 minutes, and it caused second-degree burns on the side of his face that had to be fixed with plastic surgery.
"The radiation was worse by far," McNair said. "I had bandages all over my head. I looked like a mummy. On the side of my head and neck and down to my collarbone, I had second-degree burns. My skin blistered and peeled before it grew back. That was the worst part of it.
"The first three weeks was a cakewalk, but then it got pretty severe. Afterward, it was the peeling and healing."
