When the Kansas City Chiefs kick off their regular season on Sept. 11, there's a good chance that Jamaal Charles won't be on the field.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid revealed on Friday that Charles, who tore his ACL in October, might not be ready to suit up when the Chiefs host the Chargers in less than 10 days.

"I think Jamaal is going to need a little bit of time to keep working to get himself back,'' Reid said, via ESPN.com.

Although Reid didn't sound optimistic that Charles will play, he didn't rule it out.

"We'll see how he does after a couple of days off," Reid said.

Charles tore his ACL during a Week 5 loss to the Bears last October. The running back has had over 10 and a half months to rehab, but apparently, things haven't been going as quickly as the Chiefs would have liked. According to ESPN, the Chiefs' original hope was that Charles would return for training camp.

Unfortunately for Kansas City, that's not what happened. Not only did Charles miss the early portion of training camp, but he wasn't cleared to have full contact in practice until two weeks ago. The 29-year-old also missed each of the Chiefs' preseason games.

For his part, Charles seems to think he's ready to play.

"I don't know. I'm ready for whatever," Charles said. "When my time comes, it's going to come."

This season marks the second time in five years that Charles has had to battle back from an ACL tear. After missing the final 14 games of the 2011 season with an ACL injury, Charles returned in 2012 and ran for 1,509 yards.

From a Fantasy perspective, CBSSports.com guru Dave Richard says you should go ahead and draft Charles despite the fact that he might not play in Week 1.

Richard also suggests grabbing Spencer Ware, the running back who has been taking most of the first-team reps while Charles has been sidelined. The Chiefs love to run the ball, so stashing one or two of their running backs on your roster wouldn't be the worst idea.

The Chiefs' deep backfield also includes Charcandrick West. West (634, four touchdowns) and Ware (403, six touchdowns) both had big seasons in 2015. West is a little bit more of a risk this year though, because he's been battling an elbow injury.
