The Washington Redskins had to make the move.

Their quarterback situation was a mess. And by agreeing to trade up to the second pick in the first round -- the deal cannot offcially be made until Tuesday but was reported Friday by FOXSports  --  the Redskins will now draft Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.

What does that mean? It means they may have a franchise passer for the future, but it also means Mike Shanahan and son, Kyle, will be off the hot seat this season.

How could they be there now with a rookie quarterback? Can they be expected to win now?

Brilliant move, Shanahans -- all the way around.

The Rams will reportedly get the Redskins' first-round pick this year -- sixth overall -- and one next year and another in 2014. They will also get a second-round pick.

That's a big price, but when the Redskins have seemingly been searching for a quarterback since Joe Theismann's left the field, it's a move that had to happen.

They better hope Griffin III is the real deal. He better be the next Mike Vick -- and then some.

I like the kid, but, man, that's a steep price to pay.

The Rams made a good deal. The Redskins? We'll see.

But the big winners for sure were the Shanahan family. The heat is off.
