The Cowboys' quarterback situation is once again reaching a boil, thanks to the struggles of Dak Prescott the past two weeks and Jerry Jones taking a verbal crowbar and prying open the door for the potential return of Tony Romo playing again.

Jones, since Dallas' loss Sunday night to the Giants to send the Cowboys reeling -- [insert eye roll here] -- to 11-2, has admitted "you know it when you see it" when it comes to the Cowboys playing Romo.

One former Cowboys quarterback is not impressed with the comments. Troy Aikman, in an interview with The Ticket 96.7 FM in Dallas, said he was "dumbfounded" by Jones' statements.

"I'm just really dumbfounded by the comments, and not only the first time, but why they continue," Aikman said, via the Dallas Morning News. "I don't understand why you would talk."

Aikman has a great point there. Jones could just not say anything. Or just keep committing to Prescott as the quarterback. The Cowboys are in really good shape, but the more you think about this situation, the more it's obvious just how much Jones has unnecessarily stirred up drama.

He originally said this was Romo's team no matter what. Then Prescott kept winning. Then Jerry backpedaled. Then Prescott won some more. Then Jerry turned into Deion Sanders in his prime.

Now with Prescott struggling a bit and good defenses catching up to the rookie -- Dallas has averaged less than 13 points the past two weeks against the Vikings and Giants -- Jones is starting to sweat a little bit. He, like everyone else, sees the possibility of Romo returning and Dallas' offense getting cranked up.

And it's making things very obvious to Aikman what Jones is trying to pull.

"I'm not sure that Tony, if it was left up to the owner, wouldn't be the starter now, just based on the comments that I've heard in the last couple weeks," Aikman said.

Maybe Jones does want Romo to play and has wanted him to play for a while. Jason Garrett has been clear that Prescott is the guy, but it's Jones who is waffling much more than anyone else.

The Cowboys had been mowing right through opponents on the heels of good karma and high energy in the locker room. If they continue to stumble, it would be easy, as Aikman sort of did here, to point the finger in the direction of the guy who is the ultimate heavy-handed puppetmaster in Dallas.
