Video: CBS Sports' Shannon Sharpe talks to Ravens coach, players about losing Ray Lewis
Shannon Sharpe sat down with John Harbaugh, Ray Rice, Ed Reed and Joe Flacco to discuss how they will attack the rest of the season without Ray Lewis on the field. Watch The NFL Today every Sunday at noon ET throughout the NFL season.
CBS Sports' Shannon Sharpe sat down with Ravens coach John Harbaugh, safety Ed Reed and quarterback Joe Flacco to discuss what it means for the team -- and its Super Bowl hopes -- to lose linebacker Ray Lewis, possibly for the rest of the season.
Baltimore is 5-1 and leads the AFC North, but its run defense has, in a word, been atrocious. Complicating matters: The Ravens face Arian Foster and the Texans on Sunday. There is good news, though: they have played without Lewis before, going 4-0 in his absence last season.
There's a sliver of a chance Lewis could return should the Ravens make a deep run in the postseason, and it's why the team put him on the injured reserve recall list, meaning he can play again this season.
"I talked to Ray," Harbaugh told Sharpe. "And Ray's got a plan. And I think we owe it to him -- you know, Ray Lewis deserves that opportunity. Is it going to happen? We'll find out. I have no idea -- but I tell you what, I wouldn't bet against him."
Sharpe asked Reed if the previous success "put your mind at ease [and makes it easier to] build on and maintain that level of excellence?"
"Nah," Reed said matter-of-factly before laughing. "That's Ray Lewis. Not at all, man. But I know Ray, when he's able to get back and help these young guys he will. Just knowing that when he gets here and he's talking to those guys, he's gonna be that coach to get them to understand what they need to do. That's the comforting part about it."
