Vikings QB Josh Freeman a healthy scratch vs. Cowboys
QB Christian Ponder didn't play well last week, but he'll again be under center when the Vikings host the Cowboys Sunday and Josh Freeman will be a healthy scratch.
Two weeks ago, and two weeks after signing with the Vikings, Josh Freeman made his first start for the team. It couldn't have gone worse. He completed 20 of 53 passes for 190 yards with an interception and looked wholly overmatched.
Freeman was originally set to start the following week against the Packers but was later diagnosed with a concussion. So he sat while Christian Ponder got the nod. Ponder didn't play well, but he'll again be under center when the Vikings host the Cowboys Sunday and Freeman is a healthy scratch. Matt Cassel will serve as Ponder's backup.
It's not clear if this is an indictment of Freeman's one horrible outing against the Giants or if the Vikings want to give him more time to learn the playbook. If it's the former, that could mean the Freeman experiment is over before it really started, and the team will focus on finding its next franchise quarterback in April's NFL Draft. If it's the latter, maybe Freeman gets another opportunity to prove he's worth keeping around. If not, he may have to resign himself to the fact that his immediate future in this league will be as a backup.
