Wes Welker: Patriots never had Jets playbook 'that I know of'
Wes Welker says the Patriots never had the Jets playbook. Sort of: he said 'not that I know of' when asked if they ever had it.
The Jets-Patriots rivalry got a little kick in the pants this offseason when new Browns coach Mike Pettine -- Rex Ryan's former defensive coordinator in New York -- made statements indicating he believed the Patriots, at some point, acquired the Jets playbook.
Pettine said Rex gave the books out like "candy" but Wes Welker said Friday morning on CBS Boston's "Toucher and Rich" the Pats never got one.
“Not that I know of. Every little bit helps, but at the same time I don’t know," Welker said. "It might [help]. Not that I know of."
Welker -- or at least Welker's wedding -- was actually the impetus for this story. Pettine claims Tom Brady bragged to Jets coach (and college roommate of Welker) Mike Smith about the Pats owning the playbook.
Brady's old receiver and good friend says it was "just playing mind games."
"My best friend from college was on the staff there with the Jets, Mike Smith, and we would always make stuff up with each other," Welker said. "Tom got to know Mike as well. Mike would say, ‘Oh so-and-so is gonna cover you in the game -- actually no we’re just gonna double team you.’ And I would make stuff up too. Every once in awhile you throw something true in there just to throw him off. It was just playing mind games a little bit."
So it went back-and-forth quite a bit. No surprise for a group of people who are good friends, right? It's what you would expect.
It's also no surprise Welker would deny the Patriots owning a Jets playbook. Quelling the controversy is easier than acknowledging they did, even if that doesn't put them in super-select company.
