With David Akers struggling, the San Francisco 49ers signed veteran kicker Billy Cundiff on Tuesday, according to league sources.

Akers is having the worst season of his 15-year NFL career. The six-time Pro Bowler has made just 29 of 42 field-goal attempts (69 percent). And although he's 19-of-23 (83 percent) from inside 40 yards, he's 9-of-19 (47 percent) beyond 40.

Cundiff has kicked for five teams over the course of nine seasons beginning in 2002. He got into five games with the Redskins during the 2012 season. As a member of the Ravens in 2011, he missed a potential game-tying field-goal attempt from 32 yards in the final seconds of the AFC Championship Game.

The Niners reportedly brought in Justin Medlock, in addition to Cundiff, before deciding on Cundiff.
