Would Jets sign Kevin Kolb and make him the Week 1 starter?
According to the New York 'Daily News,' the quarterback-challenged Jets would sign Kevin Kolb and make him their starter for Week 1 if the price is right following Kolb's expected release from the Cardinals.
Mark Sanchez will make $8.25 million in 2013, but that's the only thing we can say with any certainty about the Jets' 2009 first-round pick. He was so inconsistent in 2011 that the organization brought in Tim Tebow to push him. The plan blew up in everybody's faces -- Tebow rarely saw the field, Sanchez was the NFL's worst quarterback and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano was fired after less than a year on the job.
While the Jets are committed to paying Sanchez no matter what, they're not obligated to play him. It explains why they signed 35-year-old David Garrard, who last took a regular-season snap in December 2010. It also sheds some light on this, from the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta regarding Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb.
Translation: the Jets are apparently willing to do anything to keep Sanchez off the field, even if the official talking points are that he has a "leg up" on the competition.
|NFL offseason news|
Kolb, who is expected to be released any day now, knows a little something about being a franchise-quarterbacking flop. In Arizona, injuries, inconsistency and some atrocious offensive lines all conspired against Kolb, who was traded from the Eagles to the Cards before the 2011 season. If he lands in New York, he'll be reunited with Marty Mornhinweg, his offensive coordinator in Philly.
Sanchez, meanwhile, might be out of opportunities. If the organization would rather begin the rebuilding process with the likes of Garrard or Kolb or even Brady Quinn, it speaks volumes about their thoughts on the incumbent. Of course, that became clear when the Jets' brain trust traded for Tebow 12 months ago.
