Firkser's signing could be an indication that Detroit is preparing to be without rookie sensation Sam LaPorta in Sunday's affair. If the Lions are without LaPorta in the wild-card round, Firkser would likely serve as the team's top backup tight end behind Brock Wright.

Firsker was waived by the Lions on Thursday.
Firsker had signed with Detroit's active roster from the practice squad Saturday and had appeared in each of their last two games while Brock Wright tended to a hip injury. Ultimately, this may be a procedural move for the Lions, and the Harvard product could find his way back on the practice squad, especially with Wright still ailing and Sam LaPorta now on the team's injury report with an ankle injury.

Lions' Anthony Firkser: Added to active roster
The Lions signed Firkser from their practice squad to their active roster Saturday.
Firkser was elevated from the team's practice squad for last Sunday's win over Minnesota and played two offensive snaps without recording any stats. With Brock Wright (hip) deemed out Saturday versus Dallas and unable to practice at all during Week 17 prep, the Lions have decided to sign Firkser to the active roster rather than elevate him again. The third-year tight end will serve as depth behind Sam LaPorta and James Mitchell for Saturday's clash.

Firkser reverted to Detroit's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Firkser was elevated for Sunday's win over the Vikings with Brock Wright (hip) ruled out. He played two offensive snaps and 10 snaps on special teams but didn't record any stats. Now, the veteran tight end will await another opportunity to be elevated for game action. One such opportunity could come again Week 17 if Wright remains sidelined.

The Patriots released Firkser on Tuesday, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
Firkser was looking to carve out a depth role behind Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki (shoulder), but he ultimately won't make New England's initial 53-man roster. The Harvard product has appeared in at least 11 games in each of his first five NFL seasons (four with Tennessee and one with Atlanta), so he figures to draw at least some attention in free agency but will likely have to settle for a practice-squad deal.

Patriots' Anthony Firkser: Inks new deal
Firkser signed a contract with the Patriots on Thursday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Firkser appeared in 11 games for the Falcons last season after spending the first four years of his career with the Titans. The 28-year-old finished his 2022 campaign with nine catches on 13 targets for 100 yards. With the Patriots, Firkser will seek to secure a depth tight end role behind the team's top two options at the position, Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki.

Falcons' Anthony Firkser: Minimal role in 2022
Firkser caught nine of 13 targets for 100 yards across 11 appearances during the 2022 campaign.
Firkser caught just three of four targets for 39 yards over the first five games of the season before being a healthy inactive from Weeks 6 through 11. After Kyle Pitts (knee) was placed on injured reserve, Firkser's role began to grow, but he still mustered just six receptions on nine targets for 61 yards over Atlanta's final six contests. It was the fifth-year tight end's worst statistical season of his career, and he'll presumably look to move on during free agency this offseason.

Falcons' Anthony Firkser: Two catches in loss
Firkser hauled in both of his targets for 24 yards during Sunday's 19-16 defeat against the Steelers.
Firkser played just 17 offensive snaps, which was significantly fewer than Parker Hesse (34) and MyCole Pruitt (27), but the former finished second on the team in receiving yards behind Drake London. As expected, with Kyle Pitts (knee) sidelined, Hesse continues to operate as the No. 1 tight end but is mostly relegated to blocking duties, while Pruitt and Firkser have seen more work in the passing game. However, all of Atlanta's pass-catching options remain risky plays as long as Marcus Mariota is the primary signal-caller.

Falcons' Anthony Firkser: Catches lone target in loss
Firkser secured his only target for 16 yards during Sunday's 19-13 loss against Washington.
With Kyle Pitts (knee) sidelined, Firkser saw 22 offensive snaps, which put him as the No. 3 tight end behind Parker Hesse (35) and MyCole Pruitt (32). All three tight ends caught at least one pass, but Pruitt secured Marcus Mariota's lone touchdown. As long as Pitts remains out, all three tight ends figure to garner increased roles, but Pruitt will likely remain the top pass catcher among the trio.

Falcons' Anthony Firkser: May be part of plan sans Pitts
Firkser may be among the players asked to have a larger role in the absence of Kyle Pitts (knee), Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
Firkser appeared in the team's first five games, totaling three receptions on four targets for 39 yards. However, he hasn't seen the field since, logging healthy scratches each week. With Pitts on IR, Atlanta will likely take a committee approach to replacing the talented pass catcher, which may include Firkser getting back in the mix. The fifth-year tight end recorded over 200 receiving yards in each of his first four NFL campaigns with Tennessee and finished with 73 receptions on 96 targets for 678 yards and three scores across the 2020 and 2021 campaigns. If he's able to garner a similar role with Pitts sidelined, he could emerge as a viable streaming option in deeper leagues. However, he's still currently behind Parker Hesse and MyCole Pruitt on the depth chart.
