Overview

With every team in the league searching for pass rushers, speedy edge players like Applewhite always have a chance. Still, he's a bit of a one-trick pony and would have benefited from another season of collegiate action to add strength and technique.

He's coming off a solid junior season in which he led the Aztecs with 7.0 sacks. That number is a little more impressive considering he had no sacks through the first six games, but rallied with at least one in each of the team's final six games.

Analysis

Positives: Athletic edge rusher who shows good burst off the snap and the lateral quickness and closing ability to put pressure on the passer … Consistent with adequate speed in pursuit and doesn't give up on plays going away from him … Adequate change-of-direction and play recognition skills for possible move to outside linebacker.

Negatives: One-dimensional edge rusher who may not have the athleticism to switch positions and play in coverage … Effective pass rusher at this level, but isn't an explosive rusher who takes over games … Led the team with 7.0 sacks in 2006 -- none in the first six games.

Agility Tests

Combine: 4.73 in the 40-yard dash … Bench pressed 225 pounds 25 times … 35-inch vertical jump … 9-foot-7 broad jump … 4.36 20-yard shuttle … 7.50 three-cone drill.

High School

Saw action at tight end and defensive end at Narbonne, where he teamed with fellow Aztec Marc Hull … Was San Diego State's first commitment of the 2003 recruiting season … Member of the SuperPrep all-region squad as well as being rated as one of the top 100 players in California by the publication … An honorable mention all-region selection by PrepStar … An all-league and all-area selection for the Gauchos … Recorded 101 tackles, including 18 sacks as a senior … Also recovered four fumbles … Scored one touchdown on offense.

Personal

Born Dec. 31, 1985, in Los Angeles … Son of Tony and Rezlyn Applewhite … Criminal justice major.
