Overview

The three-year starter has been known for his playmaking ability. During his career, he amassed 18 plays that gained 40 yards or more. He had a string of 31 consecutive games with at least one reception and etched his name into the school record books in several categories -- seventh in all-purpose running; third in kickoff returns, fourth in kickoff return yardage; ninth in receiving yardage.

Broussard lettered in football and track at Kingwood High School, where he set eight school football records. He was an All-Houston Metro and an honorable mention all-state pick for class 5A schools by "Dave Campbell's Texas Football." He finished his career with 69 receptions for 1,450 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Broussard then enrolled at San Jose State, joining his older brother, Jamall, who was a two-year starter at San Jose State and finished his career with 117 receptions. Jamall, in his third NFL season, was a member of the Houston Texans' 2006 practice squad. John could not play with his brother in 2002, as he was declared academically ineligible under NCAA Proposition 48 rules.

The younger brother finally joined his older brother on the field for the Spartans in 2003. He had just five catches for 18 yards in 11 games, adding 11 yards on a pair of kickoff returns and also recorded one solo tackle.

As a sophomore, Broussard moved into the starting lineup, grabbing 20 passes for 343 yards (17.1 avg.) and a touchdown. He finished with 1,267 all-purpose yards that included 850 yards and a score on 34 kickoff returns (25.0 avg.).

Broussard ranked fourth on the team with 26 catches for 361 yards (13.9 avg.) and five touchdowns in 11 games during 2005. He also had 25 kickoff returns for 449 yards (18.0 avg.) and gained 820 all-purpose yards.

The multi-talented receiver ranked second on the team with a career-high 52 receptions for 844 yards (16.2 avg.) and seven touchdowns in 2006. He registered 1,096 all-purpose yards, adding 236 yards on 11 kickoff returns (21.5 avg.) and 16 yards on three carries while also recovering one fumble.

In 46 games at San Jose State, Broussard started 35 contests. He caught 103 passes for 1,566 yards (15.2 avg.) and 13 touchdowns. He rushed 15 times for 100 yards (6.7 avg.) and returned 72 kickoffs for 1,546 yards (21.5 avg.), including a score. He also recorded a solo tackle and recovered a fumble while gaining 3,212 all-purpose yards.

Analysis

Positives: Runs with a smooth stride and shows adequate movement skills … Quick off the snap, with the sudden moves needed to get vertical up field … Shows quickness running routes and the ability to separate in the open … Able to make defenders miss as he accelerates past them, but needs to do it with better consistency … Good short-area receiver who shows the ability to uncover and make proper body adjustments going up for the ball … More effective on stop-and-go routes … Knows how to come back for the underneath tosses and make adjustments to get to balls thrown behind him … Sets up well under the ball, always securing it before heading up field on returns … Has that second gear needed to zip past defenders through the seam, but just lacks consistency.

Negatives: Has a lean, yet defined frame, but there is no room for additional growth without the added bulk affecting his timed speed … Flashes good speed, but doesn't always use it to a point where he has to be accounted for at all times on the field (will throttle down when not involved in the action) … His hand/eye coordination is very inconsistent and he needs to do a better job of securing the ball before running … Lacks a competitive nature and it is rare to see him fight for the contested ball … Has marginal strength and defenders can easily reroute him with a physical press … Needs to refine his route running, as he is not precise or clean in his release … Tends to body catch, resulting in dropped passes … Does not have the timing in his leaps to compete for the ball in the air … Lacks the size and physical tools to be effective as a blocker … Light on his feet, but needs to show more dart and slash in his movements … Sometimes fails to stay in the wedge and tends to look to the sidelines on returns … Does not use his hands well to escape press coverage … Can locate the open area but seems intimidated when forced to run over the middle … Will make an effort as an upfield blocker, but misses too many hits as he will slide off after making initial contact.

Compares To: LaMont Brightful, Baltimore Ravens -- Don't be fooled by Broussard's receiving stats in 2006, as there were quite a few missed opportunities getting to the ball on his part … His body is at maximum growth potential and he has had problems with hard coaching in the past … Look for his kickoff return skills to be his hope for a roster spot.
