The three-year starter has been known for his playmaking ability. During his career, he amassed 18 plays that gained 40 yards or more. He had a string of 31 consecutive games with at least one reception and etched his name into the school record books in several categories -- seventh in all-purpose running; third in kickoff returns, fourth in kickoff return yardage; ninth in receiving yardage.
Broussard lettered in football and track at Kingwood High School, where he set eight school football records. He was an All-Houston Metro and an honorable mention all-state pick for class 5A schools by "Dave Campbell's Texas Football." He finished his career with 69 receptions for 1,450 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Broussard then enrolled at San Jose State, joining his older brother, Jamall, who was a two-year starter at San Jose State and finished his career with 117 receptions. Jamall, in his third NFL season, was a member of the Houston Texans' 2006 practice squad. John could not play with his brother in 2002, as he was declared academically ineligible under NCAA Proposition 48 rules.
The younger brother finally joined his older brother on the field for the Spartans in 2003. He had just five catches for 18 yards in 11 games, adding 11 yards on a pair of kickoff returns and also recorded one solo tackle.
As a sophomore, Broussard moved into the starting lineup, grabbing 20 passes for 343 yards (17.1 avg.) and a touchdown. He finished with 1,267 all-purpose yards that included 850 yards and a score on 34 kickoff returns (25.0 avg.).
Broussard ranked fourth on the team with 26 catches for 361 yards (13.9 avg.) and five touchdowns in 11 games during 2005. He also had 25 kickoff returns for 449 yards (18.0 avg.) and gained 820 all-purpose yards.
The multi-talented receiver ranked second on the team with a career-high 52 receptions for 844 yards (16.2 avg.) and seven touchdowns in 2006. He registered 1,096 all-purpose yards, adding 236 yards on 11 kickoff returns (21.5 avg.) and 16 yards on three carries while also recovering one fumble.
In 46 games at San Jose State, Broussard started 35 contests. He caught 103 passes for 1,566 yards (15.2 avg.) and 13 touchdowns. He rushed 15 times for 100 yards (6.7 avg.) and returned 72 kickoffs for 1,546 yards (21.5 avg.), including a score. He also recorded a solo tackle and recovered a fumble while gaining 3,212 all-purpose yards.
