Only the seventh player in NCAA history to rush for more han 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons, Coleman joined Division 1-AA players Jerry Azumah of New Hampshire (1995-98) and Adrian Peterson of Georgia Southern (1998-2001) and Division 1-A players Tony Dorsett of Pittsburgh (1973-76), Amos Lawrence of North Carolina (1977-80), Denvis Manns of New Mexico State (1995-98) and Ron Dayne of Wisconsin, 1996-99) in that prestigious group.
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's all-time leading rusher and scorer, he was also a four-time first-team All-MEAC selection. During his stellar career, he not only set school and conference all-time rushing and touchdown records, but produced 24 career 100-yard games and 19 career multi-touchdown games.
Running with the ball is a natural habit for Coleman, who was the all-time leading rusher at Halifax County High School, gaining more than 3,500 yards. He also holds the school's game and season rushing records. The Western Valley District MVP added first-team all-district and all-region honors. He also registered more than 700 receiving yards and 600 return yards during his career.
Coleman enrolled at Hampton in 2003 and was immediately thrust into the action. Despite starting just three games, he earned first-team All-MEAC and Rookie of the Year honors as he led the conference and ranked seventh in the nation in scoring with 108 points. He finished third in the MEAC and led the team with 239 carries for 1,137 yards (4.8 avg.) and 18 touchdowns, the third-best total in a season by a Pirates runner. He also had six catches for 12 yards.
Coleman became the first player in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons to start a career. He finished second in the MEAC with 1,133 yards and 13 touchdowns on 225 attempts (5.0 avg.) and caught a career-high 11 passes for 98 yards (8.9 avg.), adding two more scores.
The MEAC Offensive Player of the Year, Coleman garnered All-American and all-state honors in 2005. He ranked second in the conference with a career-high 1,326 yards on 204 carries, the second-best season total in school annals. He also finished second on the single-season record list with 19 touchdowns. The All-MEAC first-team pick led the conference and ranked eighth nationally with an average of 9.5 points scored per game. He also caught seven passes for 33 yards (4.7 avg.).
Back problems forced Coleman to miss the North Carolina A&T game and see limited action in two other contests, but he still managed to finish third in the conference in scoring and rushing. On 158 attempts, he totaled 1,052 yards (6.7 avg.) and scored 12 times. He added 28 yards on three receptions.
In 46 games at Hampton, Coleman started 36 times. He set the school and MEAC career records with 826 carries for 4,642 yards (5.6 avg.) and 62 touchdowns. He caught 27 passes for 171 yards (6.3 avg.) and two scores while also making two tackles. His 64 total touchdowns also set conference and Hampton all-time records.
