Mario Henderson
Height: 6-7 | Weight: 300 | Position:OT | College: Florida State

Overview

Much like Rip Van Winkle, Henderson finally "woke up" late in his career, continuing the Seminoles' tradition of producing quality down linemen in recent years. With his size, athletic ability and long reach, scouts have compared him to other former FSU standouts Alex Barron (Rams) and Walter Jones (Seahawks).

At Lehigh High School, Henderson was rated a three-star player by Rivals.com and one of the top 40 offensive guards in the country. He was one of Florida's Top 100 according to the Orlando Sentinel and earned all-district, all-region and all-county honors as a senior in leading his team to an 8-3 record. He sat out his junior season after transferring from Bishop Verot High School. Also as a senior, he averaged a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds as a member of the Lehigh basketball team.

Henderson played behind Alex Barron at left offensive tackle during his freshman year at Florida State. He started for an injured Barron against Miami in the Orange Bowl, as he had shed 25 pounds during the season to get an opportunity to play. The coaches felt the additional bulk was affecting his overall quickness.

He continued to play behind Barron in 2004, seeing most of his action on special teams.

Expected to replace Barron in the starting lineup in 2005, Henderson lost that job to Cory Niblock until replacing him for the final two games.

Henderson would finally become a full-time starter in 2006, providing solid protection for an offense that ranked fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring, averaging 25.1 points per game during the regular season.

Analysis

Positives: Has a tall, rangy frame with long limbs and thick lower body … Durable athlete who has never missed a game due to injuries … Delivers a punishing hand jolt and shows the foot agility to stay with his blocks moving up field … More of a stay-at-home type who might be a better fit at guard, but uses his long arms well to keep defenders from attacking his body … Uses his hands adequately to control and played with better aggression as a senior than he did in the past … Generates decent pop on contact when shooting his hands and is surprisingly nimble for a player his size … More of a waist bender, as his height prevents him from keeping his pads down, but gets off the snap with adequate quickness and shows better explosion with his punch to shock and jolt … Uses his frame well to lean into and push defenders … Has a quick kick slide to get back and seal the edge … Demonstrates efficient body control moving in space … Has the balance in his slide to mirror defenders and a good push to ride them wide of the pocket.

Negatives: Has marginal upper body muscle development … Stands too tall in his stance, making him susceptible to defenders attacking his legs … Doesn't have the anchor to prevent from being pushed back by a strong bull rush … Plays with a librarian's tempo and must get more aggressive on the field … Has a strong hand punch, but fails to shoot them with much consistency … Overextends and lunges when trying to execute cut blocks … Lacks the upper body strength to keep his shoulders squared in attempts to widen the rush lane … Not effective on pulls and traps, as he fails to keep his feet under him on the move … Not the most instinctive blocker you will find and struggles to pick up stunts and blitzes.

Compares To: WESLEY BRITT-New England … Henderson is a tall, lanky blocker who has good foot speed, but lacks awareness and is a bit of a waist bender. He struggles to adjust to stunts and lacks the upper body strength to widen the rush lane. He has the athletic ability, but lacks aggression and while football is important to him, he needs to show better dedication in the weight room. He needs patient coaching to unearth his talents, but is still a long way from contributing.
