One of the most unheralded athletes in the country, Jones has quietly gone about his job, excelling at whatever task the coaches ask. A fearless gunner on special teams, he made his living breaking up the wedge earlier in his career until finally earning a full-time job as the "X" receiver for the Pirates as a senior.
Jones earned first-team All-State, All-Region and All-Bay Rivers District honors as a senior at Bruton High School. The team's co-MVP, he caught 63 passes for 863 yards as a junior, earning second-team All-State recognition. He ended his career with more than 2,000 yards receiving.
The track team MVP was the 2002 state champion in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. He also ran on the state championship 4x100 meter relay team. He was the record holder in the 300-meter hurdles at the Christopher Newport Captain's Classic (39.3) as a senior. He also earned MVP honors in basketball.
Jones enrolled at Hampton in 2003, but was academically ineligible to play. He appeared as a reserve receiver in 12 contests in 2004, catching seven passes for 49 yards (7.0 avg). Where he made his most noise that year was attacking opposing returners, leading the nation's special teams players with 20 tackles (12 solos) while also causing one fumble.
In 2005, he started two of 12 games, ranking second on the team with 32 receptions for 631 yards (19.7 avg) and a pair of touchdowns. He also posted a pair of solo tackles. His 11 catches for 192 yards against Richmond set a school Division 1-AA playoff game record.
Jones took over "X" receiver duties in 2006. He again finished second on the team, catching 57 passes for 679 yards (11.9 avg) and five touchdowns. He attempted one pass, rushed twice for a loss of one yard and made a solo tackle.
In 36 games at Hampton, Jones started 14 times. He grabbed 96 passes for 1,359 yards (14.2 avg) and seven touchdowns. He also totaled 23 tackles (15 solos) with a forced fumble.
Analysis
Positives: Has a well-toned frame with good upper body muscle development and tapered thighs Runs at a low pad level to get a better burst in his release and shows adequate strength through the press Has the acceleration and speed to threaten deep Fluid in his movements and shows sharpness running routes Can separate, but needs to be more explosive out of his breaks Flexible athlete who looks smooth making adjustments Can bend low or reach behind for the ball Above average leaper who is developing soft hands Has the elusiveness to make the initial tackler miss and the speed to take the ball the distance Little inconsistent, but has the power to crack block Has the sudden quickness off the line to get upfield Quick twitch type who uses his speed to elude and get off the press Has the strength to fight off the jam Good route runner who can drop and accelerate sharply out of his breaks Works the sidelines well, anticipating the defenders' moves Makes good adjustments on the ball and shows excellent extend, pluck and hand-eye coordination Has the flexibility in his body to hold on to the ball after colliding with the defender Easily adjusts to the high pass and has the juking moves to make defenders miss after the catch Can drop his weight and accelerate with no wasted motions.
Negatives: Despite his sure hands, he will revert to cradling the ball on occasion Gets good separation, but needs to run more precise in his routes vs. man coverage While he shows willingness as a blocker, he needs to be more consistent taking angles in his cut blocks Struggled in the classroom earlier in his career Needs to show better focus going for the contested ball Has good speed, but must explode out of his breaks better When he fails to extend his hands, he will struggle to beat the jam Has good leaping ability, but needs to time his jumps better to reach the ball at its high point (does not play up to his size) Lacks natural hand extension going for the ball and will revert to cradling it, resulting in a handful of drops.
Compares To: JERRICHO COTCHERY-New York Jets Like Cotchery, Jones will need patient coaching and time to develop. He is a better athlete than teammate Marquay McDaniel, but not equal on the basis of football skills. His speed is a big asset and until he develops as a receiver, he will bring good value on special teams coverage units.
